Information About Maternity Health Insurance in Arizona

Living in Arizona and becoming pregnant can be an expensive decision.  Today a full term pregnancy without complications can cost a woman more than $10,000 in medical bills.  Unfortunately almost none of the individual or family medical health insurance Arizona plans in the state of Arizona cover maternity benefits.  All insurance companies have been slowly dropping maternity benefits but they are still required to offer “complications of maternity” coverage.  While this is a mandatory coverage, most insurance companies in Arizona no longer cover “normal” pregnancy bills.  Even a “c-section” isn’t usually considered a complication of maternity so most are not covered and all expenses for a c-section delivery will fall on the woman.   A c-section delivery can add another $5,000 or more to the $10,000 expense figure mentioned for a delivery without complications.

In Arizona there are only a couple of choices for maternity health insurance Arizona that will cover maternity expenses.  Healthnet is one such company but the insurance coverage is extremely expensive.  Coverage for a 25 year old healthy female is about $445 a month and coverage is necessary before pregnancy occurs.  They will not cover pre-existing pregnancies.  All other major insurance carriers such as Cigan, Humana, Blue Cross Blue Shield and United Heathcare have all discontinued normal pregnancy coverage.

With the Healthnet HMO plan you have to be covered at least twelve months before you become pregnant to qualify for maternity health insurance Arizona benefits.  Prenatal and hospital delivery costs are not covered if your baby is delivered before the 21 month exemption period from the policy start date. This HMO policy has a $3,500 annual deduction and then offers only 70% payment on medical expenses.  The policy holder is responsible for the remaining 30% not covered by Healthnet.   There is a cap to your annual 30% deductible payment of $3,500 per year.  After you’ve satisfied this cap the insurance will pay 100% of the remaining medical bills.

Living in Arizona is probably one of the most expensive states when it comes to maternity expenses and limited insurance coverage choices. Plan your pregnancy wisely and secure Arizona Health insurance long before planning a family.
